Module 1: Language and Social Action

In this module, we establish that language has an ‘action orientation’. This means that language does things; we achieve actions through the way we use language when we interact with others, through talk or writing (e.g. emails or internet discussions).

More specifically, we will cover

• what is meant by an action-orientation and how you can analyse language for its actions rather than its content
• how actions are accomplished through the way things are said (turn design)
• how participants in the interaction display their understandings of prior actions
